Congregations Called to Join in a Sacred Conversation on Race
Local churches are encouraged to join in a "sacred conversation" on race on Trinity Sunday, May 18, as part of a nationwide initiative announced last month by representatives of the United Church of Christ, the National Council of Churches and Trinity United Church of Christ. Pastors have been encouraged to preach about race relations that day and to begin race-related conversations in their congregations. National and local UCC leaders have been working to pull together resources that can support these conversations. They can be found at http://www.ucc.org/sacred-conversation/.

Coincidentally, Lincoln Congregational Temple UCC and Faith UCC are celebrating their first Africa Day celebration for that same date. The event will feature exhibits and food following the 10:30 a.m. service of worship at Lincoln Temple, 1701 11th Street NW, close to the African-American Civil War Memorial Metro Stop. Association churches are invited to send representatives to participate in the event, which will include the opportunity for conversations with representatives of African embassies. For more information, see www.lincolntempledc.org; RSVP to Barbara Ferguson Kamara at bkamara@starpower.net.

Potomac Association Highlights Tents of Hope at Spring Meeting Representatives of Potomac Association churches gathered April 26 at Rock Spring Congregational UCC for the association's spring meeting. In addition to joining in worship together, attendees heard reports on the work of association committees over the past year. Youth representatives provided a special presentation on the crisis in Sudan and Darfur and the Tents of Hope rally that is planned on the Mall in the fall. Attendees also got the chance to paint affirmations on one of the tents that will be erected as part of that initiative. Plans are under way for a gathering of association youth in connection with next fall's event. For further information on the Tents of Hope initiative, see www.tentsofhope.org.
